Popular restaurant group collapses

Alejandro 0 6 09.27 14:06
A major restaurant group has immediately shut down six venues after becoming the latest hospitality operator to collapse.

class=City Winery Brisbane Pty Ltd, based in Queensland's capital made the difficult decision to enter voluntary liquidation on Wednesday- just five years after its first venue opened.

City Winery in Fortitude Valley and 텐텐벳가입코드 on Edward Street, and Ardo's locations at Newstead, Milton, Hawthorne and Graceville have all closed, effective immediately.

An unknown number of staff have also been terminated.

Darren Vardy from Insolvency Options Pty Ltd has been appointed as the liquidator and will soon be in contact with creditors.

It's currently unknown how much money the business owes.

Chief executive Dave Cush said the decision was a heartbreaking one, citing a 'drastic drop' in customer spending, the Covid pandemic and the recent opening of the Star casino in Brisbane.

'A drastic drop in consumer spending fuelled by the current cost of living and interest rate environment, coupled with increases in labour and operational costs have all had too great of a compounding impact on our business,' he said.

Mr Cush added that the business never fully recovered from the Covid lockdowns.

The final 'nail' in the coffin however was The Star casino opening at Queens' Wharf last week.

He said City Winery 'simply cannot compete with an operation of that scale'.

'To our customers and clients affected by this closure, I offer my most heartfelt apologies and thank you for the years of support you've given us,' Mr Cush added.

'You're the reason we kept going as long as we could.'

City Winery's first venue was a converted warehouse on Wandoo Street where customers could do wine making masterclasses.

It was Brisbane's first inner-city winery since 1860 and a second location opened in the CBD shortly after.

More venues had also opened on Edward Street and Eagle Street Pier but were forced to close in 2022 when the precinct was demolished by developers.

Adro's bottleshop and wine bar initially launched in Newstead in 2023 before expanding into Hawthorne, Graceville and Milton in the months that followed.
