7 Little Changes That'll Make An Enormous Difference To Your Audi G28

How to Replace an audi tt key programming G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

Land-Rover.png1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two pins for the connector and they have different functions but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very cheap and easily accessible, especially in the case of the Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the cause of many issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi a1 car key, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine of the car is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
